Freda's Composting Page
Hey there frogster's, I'm guessing that if you are reading this then you want to learn more about composting. Well the first thing to remember is that it's a really frogtastic thing to do and its really easy, even Duncan can do it!
So follow my 5 easy steps to make your own lovely compost.
Step one - Getting Started
First you will need somewhere to make your compost.
You can either build your own compost bin or you can buy a compost bin like the one
in my cartoon, which you can buy from
WRAP.
If you want to buy a compost bin you can visit WRAP's website
www.wrap.org.uk
and buy one, But don't forget to ask whoever you live with.
Step two - Finding your compost bin a home
Compost bins like lots of sunshine, as the heat helps everything you put inside
it rot quicker.
Compost bins also like to be put on earth, like grass or mud, instead of on bricks or concrete. This means that helpful animals like worms can get into your bin and help make the compost.
It's also best to make sure that your bin is standing up straight; it could be very, very messy if it falls over.
Step Three - What to put in?
There are loads of things that you can put in your compost bin!
Here is just some of them.
These are called greens, and rot very quickly.
But wait, because there are even more things that you can compost, like:
These are called Browns and allow pockets of air to form in your bin, which is very important.
Step Four - What NOT to put in?
Well, your on your way to having some lovely compost.
But, there are some things that you should not put in your bin.
These things can make your bin smell horrible and might even attract pests like mice,
because they think it smells yummy.
Step Five - Having a lovely bin
If your bin is a bit soggy looking, then you can add more things from the brown list.
And if your bin is to dry you could add some things from the green list. Don't forget to stir your bin from time to time too, because this adds air and helps the compost to rot. Yeah! Wait 6 to 9 months and then it's READY!
You can now put your compost onto your garden to help you grow big, strong plants like I do.
And the best thing about all of this, it grows plants and makes everything even more GREEN!
